The Deity And Manhood Of Christ

Leslie M. Grant

Wonderful Paradoxes Of Scripture

This is without doubt the most amazing paradox in the universe. Confessedly the mystery of piety is great. God has been manifested in flesh 1 Tim. 3:16 ( J.N.D.).

Intellectual men have considered this incredible and impossible, and many have fought bitterly against the truth of so marvelous and precious a manifestation. Some have pointed to the facts of the lowly, suffering character of the Lord Jesus, His weariness at the well of Sychar (John. 4:6), His sleeping on a pillow (Mk. 4:38), His strong crying and tears (Heb. 5:7), His fourteen prayers in Luke's Gospel of humble dependence upon God, and many other things that prove He is truly and fully Man. Since this is true, they assume that He cannot be God. This assumption is mere human reasoning. Does their intellect decide what God can and cannot do? They give God no credit for being greater and wiser than they.

Such objectors pay no attention to those many Scriptures that plainly declare that Christ is God as well as Man. For example, Colossians 2:9 says, "In Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form. 1 John 5:20, speaking of the Lord Jesus, states "this is the true God, and eternal life." Read also John 1:1, Hebrews 1:8,  John 5:23, etc.

Besides this, the history of the Lord Jesus on earth proves the same. There are many things about Him can be attributed only to the fact that He is God His calming the raging sea (Mk. 4:39). His walking on the troubled sea (Mt. 14:25). His discerning men's thoughts and answering them (Lk 5:22). His knowing beforehand all that would take (John  13:1,3; 18:14; Lk. 9:21,22), and much more.

Admittedly it is puzzling that these two great facts can be true at the same time. However, a wonderful paradox seen in creation should make us also expect such things in the spiritual realm. Sir Isaac Newton claimed that light travels in minute particles at the rate of 186,000 miles per second. This is called the "corpuscular theory." Later the Dutch scientist Huygens contested this theory and furnished proof that light travels in waves like the waves of the sea. For this reason Newton's corpuscular theory was discarded for some time, until Einstein demonstrated that many things concerning light require Newton's theory for explanation, while other things are only explainable by the wave theory. Consequently both theories are now in use, though scientists cannot understand how both can be true. God does not have to consult our intelligence before He acts!

The believer finds deepest joy in the reality of the fact of both the Manhood and Deity of the Lord Jesus, and in all those things that are connected with these two great facts. Men cannot explain how, the two facts can be true: it is beyond his understanding. Reasoning cannot penetrate this mystery, yet it is not unreasonable, and the two facts have been demonstrated as true. Faith fully accepts this, giving credit to God for being wiser than we, greater than we and marvelously gracious as well. We are given every reason for rendering our unrestrained adoring worship to the blessed Son of God.
